Voice & Opera Center (1901) This building provides an early example of adaptive re-use. The earliest photograph found shows the building as a Boiler House, and in 1926 it was listed as a smelter.5 p.260, 32 Elaborate classical detailing was added to the earlier simple Victorian style when alterations were made in 1927 by the architectural firm of Ashton & Evans.32 Also at this time the smokestack was removed. This remodeling turned the structure into a music arts building. In 1959 it was known as the Playbox Theater.29 In 1985 it was used for Ballet, and up to 1989 it was used for ballet instruction and called the Ballet Building.4, 18
