South Physics Building (1930)

Photograph of South Physics Building. Originally the Engineering Building, it was built to house electrical laboratories, civil engineering drafting rooms and equipment.31 10-4-29, 31 2-25-30 The proposed building was much larger than the existing structure.31 3-18-30 The south wing was finished first to house the Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering Departments, which were located in the Physical Science Building (009) prior to the construction of this building.31 10-4-29, 31 3-18-30 Ramps were used instead of stairs to reduce noise and to make changes between classes easier, and drafting rooms were lit by indirect light to reduce eye strain.31 3-10-30 The contracts for this building were given to Paul Paulsen of Salt Lake City as contractor and to Scott and Welch as architects.31 3-25-30 32 The future expansion of the building, however, was put on hold because the engineering department had more room than any other department.31 10-25-45 In 1959 it was Engineering Hall and by 1985 was called the Physics Building.4, 18, 29
