Military Science Building (1927)

Photograph of Military Science Building. Although the extant building 023 was constructed circa 1927, there was an original portion built in 1904 as the Metallurgy Building which also housed the Bureau of Mines.32 The School of Mines was organized in 1895 and this building, the Metallurgical Building, was built to house it.12 In 1913 legislation was enacted that allowed graduate students to do research beneficial to the mining industry in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines.12 The new Mines Building (024) constructed in 1927 was intended to house the Bureau of Mines as well.12 Around this same time the extant Military Science Building, except twenty feet on the south end, was added to the 1904 building.32 In 1928 there was a fire that damaged the center of the roof, but this was not a major problem as classes were moved to the newly constructed Mines Building (024).31 12-21-28 In 1939, the building was not quite so lucky as another blaze caused the entire 1904 portion of the building to be lost.31 2-16-39 Still called the Metallurgical Building, a 20 foot section was added to the south end after remains of the 1904 structure were removed.32 From 1946 to at least 1959 it was the Civil Engineering Building.29, 32 It was officially named the Utah Geological Survey Building in 1966 and officially renamed the Military Science Building in 1976.28 It may have been used as both for a period of time because is was listed as the Utah Geological Survey Building in 1985.18 In 1989 it was classified as being used for instruction as the Military Science Building.4
