Mines Building (1927-8) The Utah engineering experiment station, a department of the School of Mines was established by the state legislature in 1909.31 12-4-28 In 1913 the Department of Metallurgical Research was added.31 12-4-28 There was a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines beginning in 1925, and that same year, funding for this building was made.31 12-4-28 The architects were Scott and Welch and the contractors were Trowbridge and Fetzer.32, 31 9-30-27 Dr. Joseph F. Merrill, director of Mines and Engineering was instrumental in developing the mines and metallurgical programs at the University of Utah as well as securing funding for this building.31 9-30-27 In addition, Dr. Merrill was a liaison with the Bureau of Mines which had offices in this building.31 9-30-27 The building also had classrooms and laboratories.31 9-30-29 The north portion of the building was built in 1927, and an addition was put on the south end in 1939 by Wooley and Evans.32 This was a $50,000 addition built for six new classrooms and 12 new laboratories.31 In 1938 the building housed Civil Engineering and Metallurgy.32 The top floor was made into dormitory space for aviation trainees in 1943 and the whole building was remodeled in 1947 by Fetzer and Fetzer. 6, 32 It has been the Mines Building since its construction.18, 4
