Nora Eccles Harrison (1939)

Photograph of Nora Eccles Harrison. This was originally a 35 men barrack and medical office for the Army's Medical Department and was acquired by the University 1948.7, 10, 32 Despite its multiple uses, they have all been medical related. In 1959 it was the Muscular Dystrophy Lab (Metabolic) and in 1961 it was a Metabolic Lab for Biochemistry.17, 29 It was officially named the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute in 1976 and remained so until 1981 when it was renamed the Nora Eccles Harrison Building.28 In approximately 1983, a 9,000 sq. ft. addition was made to the South side of the building so that by 1985 it also housed Family and Community Medicine. 4, 18, 30 In 1995, Brixen & Christopher Architects won a Utah AIA Design Award for an addition completed in 1993 on the west side of the 1983 addition. Both additions are attached to the building through a passage or 'hyphen' connection, thus the integrity is not as diminished as it would have been had the additions covered an entire side.
