RDT Storage/Building #508 (1941)

Photograph of RDT Storage/Building #508. A unique feature of this building is the connector between it and Building 507. All of the buildings in this area were connected by such corridors prior to 1991. Designed by the U.S. Engineers Office, this was originally a ward for the Army hospital complex.7, 32 It was acquired by the University of Utah in 1947, and like Building 507 it was Wasatch Hall, a men's dormitory from at least 1959 to 1961.4, 17, 29 Although the records are unclear, it appears that this building was one of four barracks from Fort Douglas that was used to house male students starting in 1947.6 In the early 1970s the building had a variety of functions and was often being shared by different departments. For example, in 1970 it was being used both by the Repertory Dance Theater and for Anthropology Storage, in 1972 it was used for storage by the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Medicine, and in 1973 even Library Printing was using it.25 By 1976 it was "RDT, Mail, Univ. Press and remained so until about 1989.4, 18, 26 There is a well preserved stone retaining wall on the site which contributes to the integrity of the building.
