Web Publishing Directory and FTP Access Information

This document describes the "public_html" folder and FTP access features of users'  home directories on the Fountainhead server.

WEB

The "public_html" folder in users' home directories is part of the college's web site. It is a place where you can put files to be viewed by anyone on the Internet. This folder and two files in it ("README.HTML" and "INDEX.HTML") are created automagically. The "INDEX.HTML" file is an example of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to change or replace.

There are four filenames that are read by the school's web server without explicitly typing them (in the following order): "default.htm", "default.html", "index.htm", and "index.html". For example, if your username is "u0123456", then your corresponding web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is "http://www.arch.utah.edu/u0123456". By typing your URL into a web browser (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer), the file named "default.htm" in your "public_html" folder (in your home directory) is automatically shown if it exists. If "default.htm" doesn't exist, it looks for "default.html", then "index.htm", and finally for "index.html". If there are no files found with these names, then you will see an error.

You may also explicitly enter the URL for a particular file in your "public_html" folder. For example, to view the file named "my.html" in user u0123456's "public_html" directory, enter "http://www.arch.utah.edu/u0123456/my.html" for the URL.

In order for anyone to view files within your "public_html" folder, they must have read-only permissions for the group "Everyone" set. If you accidentally delete your "public_html" folder, you can re-create it just fine, but remember to grant "Everyone" read-only permissions for the folder and files within it. This can be done from any lab computer. If file permissions aren't set for "Everyone", you will see an "Unauthorized due to ACL on resource" page.

FTP

Your home directory is set up to allow FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access using your username and password from any computer connected to the Internet. You can use FTP to send or get files from your home directory to your personal computer here in the studio or at home or work over the Internet. It's a convenient way to update the web files in the "public_html" folder.

The school's FTP server address is "ftp.arch.utah.edu" and requires a secure connection. FileZilla ("http://filezilla-project.org/") is an FTP client (or program) which is open source, cross platform, and completely free.  To access your home directory using FTP, you need to install FileZilla (or use a different client that supports secure connections).  After launching FileZilla, under the File menu choose "Site Manager...".  Then create a new site and name it whatever you want.  Fill in "ftp.arch.utah.edu" for the Host, "FTPES - FTP over explicit TLS/SSL" for the Servertype, "Normal" for the Logontype, then your username and password to connect.
